Port Facilities

The Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District is the 10th-busiest port district in the United States, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers waterborne statistics.

City Docks

The Port’s City Docks facility is located 34 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is connected to the gulf by the 12-meter- (40-foot-) deep Calcasieu Ship Channel.

City Docks is a 200-acre facility that contains the general cargo facilities which include 12 deep water berths that can accommodate up to 12 vessels simultaneously, with more than 1.6 million square feet of covered storage space.

Berths 1-9 and berths 15 and 15B have a projected depth of 35 feet, except Berth 8, which has a projected depth of 40 feet. Berth 8 is used for bulk grains.

The height of the docks at MLW is 14 feet. Most warehouses are serviced by rail. Also located at City Docks is a bulk grain terminal operated by a private party. City Docks includes the Port Foreign Trade Zone 87.

Bulk Terminal No. 1

This dry bulk terminal, is located on 71 acres at the Rose Bluff Cutoff on the Calcasieu Ship Channel, which is located 32 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The bulk terminal has a 2,200-foot-long wharf and a 40-foot projected depth at dockside. The facility can accommodate two vessels for loading and unloading simultaneously.

Bulk Terminal No. 1 operates two traveling ship loaders and two traveling clamshell bucket unloaders. The pet coke ship loader is rated for 3,200 short tons per hour and the calcined coke ship loader is rated for 1,200 short tons per hour. The ship/barge clamshell-bucket type unloader and conveyor system is located at the site and traverses 740 feet of dock with an average unloading rate of 300 short tons each of barite per hour.

The site is capable of transfer from vessel to vessel, vessel to truck, or to open storage. The terminal processes more than 3.1 million short tons of dry bulk material annually, such as petroleum coke, calcined coke, barite, rutile, and other dry bulk commodities. Other equipment includes: a 100-ton railcar rollover facility, a bottom dump rail unloading pit, crusher, radial stacker, three pet coke reclaimers, six 2,200-short-ton storage silos, and a truck scale.

Bulk Terminal No. 4

Bulk Terminal No. 4 is an aggregate terminal, leased to a private company, with a 251-foot dock face extending to 335 feet with dolphins, a 35-foot depth, ability to move 1 million metric tons of imported aggregate annually, and a deck height of 12 feet above MLW.
