At a recent gathering of the Board of Commissioners, Executive Director Richert Self led colleagues and friends in expressing appreciation for Hayden’s contributions to navigation, safety, and commerce on the Calcasieu Ship Channel. Channing Hayden began his maritime career in 1967 on the Mississippi River, a waterway that has long been central to Louisiana’s trade and transportation. His early work with the New Orleans Steamship Association placed him at the heart of port operations during a period of significant growth in Gulf shipping.
Leadership in Maritime Labor Relations
Hayden’s responsibilities at the New Orleans Steamship Association involved the administration of International Longshoremen’s Association labor contracts. His deep understanding of port labor dynamics and vessel operations earned him the respect of both management and labor representatives.
In 2005, after nearly four decades of service in New Orleans, he retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of the New Orleans Steamship Association, doing business as the Steamship Association of Louisiana. In 2006, Hayden joined the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District as Director of Navigation.
