Port of Lake Charles Honors National Rice Month with 26th Annual Rice Cookoff

The Port of Lake Charles recently had the distinct pleasure of hosting the Calcasieu-Cameron Rice Growers’ 26th Annual Rice Cookoff, an event that highlights not only the culinary creativity of our local students but also the significant role rice plays in our community. With participants from 13 schools across Calcasieu and Cameron parishes, the cookoff was a vibrant showcase of innovation, flavor, and a deep appreciation for one of Louisiana’s most important crops.

The cookoff was co-sponsored by the Port of Lake Charles, the Calcasieu-Cameron Rice Growers Association, and the LSU AgCenter. A special thank you goes to Farmers Rice Milling, which generously donated rice cookers to the participating students, further encouraging their culinary explorations.

A Culinary Showcase of Young Talent

The event was a delightful blend of competition and camaraderie, where promising young chefs demonstrated their skills and creativity in preparing rice dishes that ranged from traditional to contemporary. The dedication and enthusiasm displayed by these students were truly inspiring.

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s cookoff:

  • First Place: Zayne Chaudary of Moss Bluff Middle School for his “Buttery Chicken” dish.
  • Second Place: Addison Raseberry of Alfred M. Barbe High School for her “Cacio e Pepe Chicken and Rice” dish.
  • Third Place: Madalynne Arendt of Westlake High School for her “Cajun Pork and Sausage” dish.
  • Heart-Healthy Winner: Reagan Mott of Starks High School for her “Chicken Fajita Rice Bowl” dish.

These young chefs not only showcased their culinary talents but also highlighted the versatility of rice as a key ingredient in various cuisines, reminding us of its role as a staple on dinner tables and its economic significance to Louisiana.

A Legacy Cargo with Global Reach

September is National Rice Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role rice plays in our diet and economy. Louisiana rice is more than just a food source; it is a “legacy cargo” at the Port of Lake Charles. This region’s rice is essential to both our local culture and the global market, shipped to destinations worldwide, ensuring that Louisiana’s agricultural heritage continues to thrive.
