Celebrating Student Talent at the 27th Annual Rice Cook-off

Showcasing the Versatility of Rice in Southwest Louisiana

The Port of Lake Charles was proud to once again host the 27th Annual Rice Cook-off in partnership with the Calcasieu-Cameron Rice Growers. This annual tradition highlights the importance of rice as a staple crop in Southwest Louisiana while giving local high school students the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity in the kitchen.

From savory soups to inventive desserts, this year’s participants delivered dishes that captured both flavor and innovation. The event brought the community together to recognize young culinary talent and to celebrate the region’s agricultural heritage.

Honoring the 2025 Winners

The competition produced four standout winners whose dishes impressed the judges with both taste and presentation.

First Place Excellence

Bella Cash of DeQuincy High School earned first place with her Chicken Wild Rice Soup. The dish balanced comfort and refinement while highlighting the depth that Louisiana rice can bring to classic flavors.

Creative Sweet and Savory Combinations

Second place went to Addison Rasberry of Barbe High for her Rice Pudding Eclair. This inventive dessert blended French pastry tradition with the heart of a Southern kitchen, showcasing rice in an entirely new way.

A Fresh Approach to Global Flavor

Third place was awarded to Shelby Maxinier of Vinton High for her Chicken Pineapple Bowl. The tropical elements combined with local rice to create a bright and flavorful dish that reflected the adaptability of rice to international cuisines.

A Special Award for Health and Heart

The Heart-Healthy award went to Kyra Ramirez of Westlake High for her Mexican Chicken Tacos. By focusing on balance and nutrition without sacrificing taste, Kyra demonstrated how rice can play a role in healthy, everyday meals.

Supporting Students and Strengthening Community Ties

The Rice Cook-off is more than a culinary competition. It provides a platform for students to gain recognition, sharpen their skills, and take pride in their agricultural roots. For the Port of Lake Charles, supporting this event reflects an ongoing commitment to the region’s farmers, educators, and young people.

Looking Ahead to the Future

Each year, the Rice Cook-off continues to grow as a highlight of the community calendar. The creativity displayed by students ensures that the future of Louisiana cuisine remains strong, with rice at its center. The Port of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu-Cameron Rice Growers look forward to continuing this tradition and celebrating the next generation of talent in the years to come.
